Miguelina begins on a hot day, where a group of religious folk are praying ardently for rain to fall upon their dry land. In the meantime, a small boy drops by to talk to Doña Miguelina, an old woman who passes the time making baskets. He tells her that his parents think that Don Jose, her husband, will never come back, while the other women in the village talk about how mysterious it is that the rain stopped falling when her husband left and she started weaving baskets. Ante La Araña (English: In Front Of The Spider) begins with a woman named Caterina. She’s just about to start writing, when something catches her attention on the ceiling above. After taking care of it hesitatingly, she hears the summon of a bell. She brings the tray to the old woman in bed, to whom she relates that she just killed a spider. Paseo starts on a cold day. One man, a poet, is preparing a cigarette. Another man comes to him and asks him for one too, but the first man says it’s the last one he has. They share the cigarette instead, and speak little. They then notice the man crying behind them, who says he’s sad as he was never able to confess to a woman. The poet then comes up with a plan that may involve his lighter and a few carefully chosen words. Continue Reading
